The natural and cultural-historical values of the island of Mljet are protected within a national park. There are two lakes on the island – Malo (Small) and Veliko (Big), chattimes connected to each other. The Big Lake is also connected to the open sea by means of a channel. There are also lots of animals – fallow deers, wild pigs, mongooses. One can enjoy homemade dishes – fish, lobster, cheese and wine.
On an inlet on the Big Lake there is a Benedictine monastery built in the 12th century whereas the national park includes diverse flora– Aleppo pine, holm-oak and macchia. The southern side of the island is the habitat of the Mediterranean monk seal.
